Chinese badminton dominance stems from a wide pool of talents integrated all over the country. Each separate area has their gifted players ascend the rankings, before they are supported by the state to attend national competitions. In Chinese culture it is an extreme honor to represent your country and bring glory to it and to yourself. Intense indoor training is implemented to build the most talented athletes, both physically and mentally. China also has a wealth of highly skilled- highly trained coaches, who were international athletes themselves and can motivate and implement success. Even the smallest places in China have well-equipped training facilities. The most promising athletes are quickly weeded out and placed in the system at a very early age. They receive world class training in their early years to ensure their success later on.
In Olympic badminton history Chinese badminton players have won 30 out of the 76 medals handed out since it was introduced in only 1992. They hold 11 gold, 6 silver and 13 bronze medals. Li Yongbo (at left) became the head coach of the Chinese National Badminton team, after he retired from a successful professional career. From the mid 80's to the early 90's Yongbo and his partner Tian Bingyi captured the 1987, 1989 World Championships, the 1987, 1989 and 1991 All -England Championships and the Danish Open in '85,'87,'89,'90 and '91. They also captured world titles with the Thomas Cup team in '86, '88 and '90. At the 1992 games in Barcelona they were the bronze medalists. Yongbo told the NanFang Daily newspaper in 2003, "Throughout the year, the Chinese team performance has been very stable. Especially from the World Championships, we managed to win 1st for 3 events on each tournaments. As for the distribution of medals, we have gold for each of the 5 events. WS, WD, MS are very strong with more gold medals, however, MD and XD are weaker. From the 5 events, we consistently win more than ½ of the medals, this proves that Chinese badminton team is still the strongest in the world."
